I had to type and email detailing whatever i knew on iPods. I had various instances in my life now where my friends ask the same question and I land up typing everytime. I thought I better blog about it and save it for ever.
I will try to give as much options/information I know for now in order to make up your mind on what you want.

- iPods get categorized as video and non-video ones. So decide on whats needed.
- When going for audio, decide how many songs you will listen (on an average) and decide on the size needed. If the plan is to buy a small memory iPod, he/she should be patient enough to change songs from computer to iPod for change in interest to listen to a set of songs.
- There is no choice of ‘small size’ if video option is chosen. The least is 30 GB and it also comes as 60 and 80 GB versions.
- For audio, there are whole lot of varieties like 512 MB, 1 GB, 4 GB and 8 GB. Some of them are called old generation iPods (using buttons) and some are new generation (rolling type).
More fancy designs are available for audio iPods rather than video ones.
But you will have to buy an iPod only if…
- You have a passion for music and don’t tolerate low quality audio. An ordinary MP3 player would do if you aren’t too interested in music or quality of audio.
- You have a PC or a Laptop where you have stored the media files you want to load the data. Remember, even for charging the iPod you will need USB drive.
Some other complaints from my friends who bought iPods without knowing these facts.
- You should spare time once for initializing settings and music album details. Because if you try to dump all music you have, it would become tough to find where your music is stored in your iPod.
- You should use iTunes software (provided when you buy iPod) to convert all MP3s you have to iTunes (it is still MP3 format, but enhanced enough to get good clarity audio).
- If buying video iPod, you will have to convert the video file to MP4 format. Apple doesn’t give software for this. It’s our pain to convert the same.
- Keep in mind always that iPod is designed for Apple MAC pc and not Microsoft windows pc.
Alternatives
- You can try ZUNE (from Microsoft). Even that is a good product. It also has same varieties as iPods. All the disadvantages mentioned above could be overcome if you have a windows PC/Laptop. I couldn’t buy that since it came to market only after I got my iPod.
- You can wait till June 2007 to get iPhone which has a feature of a hi-fi cell phone and video ipod.
