iPods and the options

I had to type and email detailing whatever i knew on iPods. I had various instances in my life now where my friends ask the same question and I land up typing everytime. I thought I better blog about it and save it for ever.

I will try to give as much options/information I know for now in order to make up your mind on what you want.

  1. iPods get categorized as video and non-video ones. So decide on whats needed.
  2. When going for audio, decide how many songs you will listen (on an average) and decide on the size needed. If the plan is to buy a small memory iPod, he/she should be patient enough to change songs from computer to iPod for change in interest to listen to a set of songs.
  3. There is no choice of ‘small size’ if video option is chosen. The least is 30 GB and it also comes as 60 and 80 GB versions.
  4. For audio, there are whole lot of varieties like 512 MB, 1 GB, 4 GB and 8 GB. Some of them are called old generation iPods (using buttons) and some are new generation (rolling type).
More fancy designs are available for audio iPods rather than video ones.

But you will have to buy an iPod only if…

  • You have a passion for music and don’t tolerate low quality audio. An ordinary MP3 player would do if you aren’t too interested in music or quality of audio.
  • You have a PC or a Laptop where you have stored the media files you want to load the data. Remember, even for charging the iPod you will need USB drive.

Some other complaints from my friends who bought iPods without knowing these facts.

  1. You should spare time once for initializing settings and music album details. Because if you try to dump all music you have, it would become tough to find where your music is stored in your iPod.
  2. You should use iTunes software (provided when you buy iPod) to convert all MP3s you have to iTunes (it is still MP3 format, but enhanced enough to get good clarity audio).
  3. If buying video iPod, you will have to convert the video file to MP4 format. Apple doesn’t give software for this. It’s our pain to convert the same.
  4. Keep in mind always that iPod is designed for Apple MAC pc and not Microsoft windows pc.

Alternatives

  • You can try ZUNE (from Microsoft). Even that is a good product. It also has same varieties as iPods. All the disadvantages mentioned above could be overcome if you have a windows PC/Laptop. I couldn’t buy that since it came to market only after I got my iPod.
  • You can wait till June 2007 to get iPhone which has a feature of a hi-fi cell phone and video ipod.

Qualification

As promised in my last blog, i discuss on the qualification needed for software industry in the present world. I disclose at this point of time that it is purely my vision on the industry and nothing to do with pointing against other's opinions. Most of the companies while recruiting freshers only prefer ENGINEERING graduates to any other arts or science grads. I just had to do some sort of analysis before i blogged about it and indeed did some ground work for the same. I contacted some of my college and school friends who are now working in various MNCs as software engineers/programmers/analysts etc... Sunny, My friend, as i said in my previous blog is a Math grad. When a Software company calls for freshers, it is a clear point that they mention "Candidates with excellent academic records and aptitude and attidue are needed". But they still stick to the point that they need only ENGG grads for those posts. If at all they need other grads, they specify the...

Thiruppachi!!!!

Yesterday night show I went to Thiruppachi. Hmmm atleast this time around i didnt feel bored. Definitely this film is better than MADHURA. Hats off to the director for trying something new... oops not the story, but i meant the screenplay. A typical film for Vijay fans. Although i am not a Vijay fan, I admire him. Lots of senti in the film. Looks like ladies will like it for sure. Nothing can come near my God's next movie.... "Chandramukhi".

A Weekend to remember

It was indeed a long weekend for me and a weekend to remember for the rest of my life. I went on a vacation (or rather an extended picnic) to Vizag. My uncle called up my family to join in his house warming and thats all the reason I needed to enjoy a fabulous weekend in and around Vizag. Here are my visits on a daily basis from saturday to Tuesday. Saturday: We went to a place called Simmachalam where Lord Narashimha is famous for, followed by another Sai Seer Mutt. Sunday: It was the house warming day. In the evening we went to Kailasha giri, where lord Shiva and Parvathi's statues are made of white stone and kept in an open place. It is a sort of hangout for the Vizagans and since it is on a hill top, we could have a view of whole Vizag city in the evening with lights. Really worth spending time there and get yourself relaxed. Monday: This was a full day trip planned to go for only 2 places. One is Arukku which is a Hill station (probably like Yercaud, not anywhere ...
